Search Engine Optimization

What is search engine optimization?

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the art and science of applying a set of tools and techniques when building a web page aimed at improving the position of the page in search engine listings. That is, getting your page to display higher in the natural search results list when someone searches for what you offer.

What are 'natural' search results?

Natural search results are the non-paid listings search engines display for a given search term. For example, on Google, the listings in the blue box at the top of the results page, and the listings on the right side of the page are 'sponsored links' - paid ads. You buy your way up the page by the amount you are willing to pay for each clickthrough from the ad to your site.

The major portion of the page is where natural, free listings are displayed. About 60% of Yahoo search users and 70% of Google users use the natural search listing. The position a site achieves in natural search is where search engine optimization comes in.

How can optimization help my position on search engine?

When you enter a search term in a search engine, tennis shoes for example, the search engine displays to you a list of the pages it thinks are most relevant to 'tennis shoes'. It scores pages and displays them from most to least relevant. The higher ranking pages are doing a better job of making the search engine see that they are 'more about' tennis shoes than lower ranking pages.

Search engine optimizers attempt to understand the secret formula, or algorithm, each search engine uses to score web pages. We alter pages so they will score better. Search engine algoithms are quite complex and, well, secret. That's why improving a page's search results position is an ongoing process of optimizing, checking position, and optimizing again.
